Akin to the shearing cut of wood by a gouge. Sturdy plastics may cut better with a knife edge tool bit than a metal cutting bit. There are usually several sellers of lathe parts advrtised in each issue of Home Shop Machinist magazine.

Google them they carry a wealth of knowledge, kinda like this site. There are a couple of talk fourms that deal with Atlas and Craftsman lathes they carry alot on information on parts and operation. I bought to old lathe to turn out the poly bushings for our OMC hay machines, the factory bushings are real expensive and I found that bushings from a morris tillage machine are same OD but smaller ID so if I can make them larger I can save about $35 a bushing. I was make some chips with it this morning, just playing around and the old thing works pretty good, I got alot of tooling with it,and other measureing tools, mics, etc.

I recently bought a old Atlas QC 54 turning lathe, was wondering where to get a manual for one and if you can still get parts for them, this one has a few gears that show some wear and would like to replace down the road, still look fine but would like to have some in the parts bin.
